The Top Album of the Year: Rosalía's Masterpiece Secures the Premier Spot.

On the surface, this work may look closer to a challenging academic quiz than the latest pop record by an artist whose previous single was a collaboration with an international pop star. Split across four distinct sections and performed in 13 languages, this is a dizzying orchestral-influenced work investigating feminine mystery, spiritual ascent, and bodily change, often through the perspective of various saintly figures. The end of a relationship—a theme treated with grounded honesty elsewhere—is shot heavenward here, buoyed by the lush presence of a full symphony orchestra and work from a Pulitzer-winning songwriter among a vast roll call of collaborators. The pure audacity by itself makes the efforts of contemporary artists seem quite laughable.

Rising Above Scholarly Exercise

That Lux manages to escape overly intellectual posturing feels nothing short of miraculous, with full praise belonging to Rosalía. Although it's not the first time project to alchemize historical sounds and the present, the scale are far greater on Lux, and the balancing act far more precarious. What really raises her fourth release, beyond its complex melodies, rich arrangements, and inherent theatricality, is a core sense of fun. Similar to the legendary Björk at her peak, there is a wondrous quality to the vocalist's singing that pulls the listener up in its tornado. When she's breaking your heart in two, the listener still desire to stay right there for the ride.

A Prime Example of Exuberance

This playful energy comes forth clearly on a stirring piano-led ballad inspired by Saint Clare. It bathes in a sorrowful melancholy for several moments. Suddenly, everything drops silent, to reveal there's a gleeful laugh followed by a declaration prior to a comically over-the-top string surge crashes down like comedic force. The track immediately segues to the wild single featuring racing strings, an imposing choral group, and a cameo role from the artist herself.

"The magic of this album lies in the listener never exactly know—nor wish to predict—what it is going next."

Nearly every song finishes in a completely distinct place from how it started. A track explores the transient nature of fame with a featherlight orchestration before collapsing in digital chaos. Elsewhere, a song echoing the artist's previous trap-infused work starts out moody and sinister, with menacing vocals, before fluttering traditional rhythms and a heavenly chorus enter to soften its rough edges.

The Balance Between Experiment and Accessibility

A key balancing act of Lux is straddling the gap between bold experimentation and mainstream appeal. This is no surprise that it has become her first work to crack the Top 5 of major charts: its heart contains a collection of utterly catchy hits. A song sung primarily in the English language swells on a chorus that seems to gather more and more nagging melodies as it spins skyward. That trick is repeated on a different expansive ballad that grows and constricts, intertwining multiple tunes as an intricate tapestry.

  • A waltz-like number charms via its playful, Disney-adjacent drama and a chant-along chorus.
  • In its words, it aligns with cultural impact of contemporary breakup songs, lambasting a former lover labeled an "psychological terrorist".
  • Throughout the album, the vocals carry a sharp edge, akin to a fairy-tale character concealing a knife: "Top prize in being a motherfucker / You've the podium of disappointment."

An Opulent Banquet for the Ears

This album represents pop on a maximalist scale, a hungry grasp for capital-A Art amid of impending artificial blankness. It eschews self-absorption in favor of glorious elevation, crafting an over-the-top drama that masterfully manages its own built-in ridiculousness. This is a deep well of hidden gems that requires patience to completely mine but never feels like a chore. While some major releases of 2025 felt like a meager scraps, Lux is a lavish banquet at which the guests at the table, perhaps tipsy on holy wine, flutter between conversations about ancient figures, the profound sensation of soul-shattering sadness, and common stories about useless men. It is a modern-day musical from pop's most restlessly inventive visionary.
