A fatal train derailment in the Mexican state of Oaxaca has claimed the lives of at least 13 people, an incident likely to revive critical opposition regarding the speed and handling of the country's flagship government projects.
The disaster happened on the Interoceanic Train, a rail link constructed to link the Atlantic Ocean and Pacific Ocean across the narrowest part of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This project was created to offer an different freight railway path to the Panama Canal, with the goal of spurring economic development in the area.
“We shall meticulously determine the cause of this tragedy,” stated the head of state.
The leader announced that, of the approximately 250 passengers on board, another 98 were injured, with five of those in grave condition. The official noted plans to visit Oaxaca to meet those affected.
Flagship Project of Past Leadership
The Interoceanic Train was a central public works project of the previous administration, whose presidency ended the previous year. This project was a hallmark of his leadership's economic vision for the southern region.
Another massive rail project from that time, a tourist and cargo loop around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also central to the broader strategy to stimulate the economy of a historically poorer part of the country.
Project Execution and Worries
The building of both rail lines was managed by the armed forces, marking a dramatic increase of its role in national works. They were built at an fast-tracked rate, surpassing expectations to be partially opened before the end of that administration.
However, this fast-paced schedule had concurrently sparked persistent questions over construction quality.
- Sunday's crash was the third event on the Interoceanic Train this year.
- This includes an prior crash this month when a train hit a truck at a level crossing.
- The other major rail project has also experienced a couple of non-lethal derailments.
Appeals for Review and Suspension
In the aftermath of the disaster, the leader of a major opposition party urged an prompt suspension in the building and running of all similar projects.
This pause was requested pending a comprehensive independent investigation. The party declared that the loss of life "calls for immediate answers."
In response, the national leader insisted that the train had been functioning in full compliance with all security protocols. Promises were given that the government would continue to be "accountable" in both the development and operation of these strategic projects.
